How can we as Designers help make Construction and Maintenance teams safer from behind our desks?

 

Did you know as a Principal Designer or Designer under the Construction, Design & Management Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) you have to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate health and safety in the pre-construction phase of a project? This includes identifying, eliminating or controlling foreseeable risks. Also, Regulation 9, Duties of a designer states: “Must take into account the general principles of prevention and any pre-construction information to eliminate, so far as is reasonably practicable, foreseeable risks to the health or safety of any person carrying out or liable to be affected by the construction work.”

 

Carrying out a designer risk assessment and referencing it to your drawings/designs makes it very clear to the client and contractors that you have assessed the risks throughout the design stages. It helps demonstrates an efficient and effective way to communicate the design risks to the project team.

 

This should then be followed up with an interactive form of communication to ensure that the information presented has been understood fully and any questions to be asked. We often like to set up a pre-construction meeting with the appointed construction team and run through issues and answer any questions they have at the outset.

 

This helps to create a good working relationship from the start and allows for a smooth flow of information and good team working environment.
